(Because when homeschoolers take a break from teaching, we accidentally become cruise directors with no off switch.)
Ah, school holidays.
A time when traditional school parents breathe a sigh of relief and let someone else entertain their kids for a week.
Homeschool parents?
✔️ Same kids.
✔️ Same house.
✔️ 400% more snack requests.
✔️ Somehow... less free time than when we’re doing lessons
🍌 What School Holidays Actually Look Like in My House:
🍪 1. I Retire as Teacher, Immediately Rehire as Snack Logistics Manager
During school: “No snacks, we’re doing math.”
During holidays: “Here’s your 7th snack today, I’ve given up on life.”
🧽 2. Turns Out “Free Time” Means “Let’s Destroy the House Faster”
During lessons, the house stays mostly intact.
On holiday?
It’s like they’ve been given a personal challenge: “How many rooms can we trash before Mum finds the broom?”
Spoiler: All of them.
🎮 3. Screen Time Negotiations Become a Full-Time Career
✔️ Me: “Fine, but educational games first.”
✔️ Them: “Minecraft is educational.”
✔️ Also them: Builds a lava trap for their sibling instead of doing the science mod.
🏕️ 4. Outdoor Play = Me, Sitting in the Backyard Wondering If This Counts as a Break
Yes, they’re outside.
No, I’m not relaxing.
I’m refereeing backyard wrestling and stopping the toddler from eating rocks.
📅 5. “Holiday Learning” Plans? Never Happened.
I printed a cute activity packet.
No one opened it.
They built a cardboard fortress instead.
Honestly, that probably covered STEM anyway.
🤔 But Didn’t You Want a Break?
Sure did.
Unfortunately, I forgot that as a homeschool parent, school holidays mean your job title just shifts from “educator” to “entertainment coordinator, snack lady, and emotional support human.”
Same boss, no pay rise.
🎯 Final Thought:
Homeschool holidays aren’t about rest.
They’re about resetting your brain, lowering expectations, and remembering that keeping your kids fed and mostly clothed counts as a productive week.
You’ll return to lessons eventually...
Probably for the peace and quiet.
